Abstract
The 5p→5s resonance transition in Rb atoms, isolated in solid krypton was observed in emission. This was accomplished by studying the recombination process in a85Kr-crystal: ; Rb++e−→Rb*→Rb+h v. The observed emission lines are much more narrow than the usually observed absorption lines. The change of the emission spectrum with increasing crystal age, i.e. with increasing radiation damage, clearly shows that the multiplet structure of the “blue” absorption band of alkali-atom-doped rare-gas solids is due to crystal imperfections.
