Abstract

The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission is completing a pilot project which demonstrates a unique application of Worm‐based optical disc technology for the storage and retrieval of government records. Information which is captured at the source or from an optical character reader is stored on the disc in the form of the ASCII text and the original image of the complete document. The full text search software and indexes to the images are all stored on the optical disc. In this way a user can perform a full text search on the records and retrieve either the ASCII or the original document. By combining full text search and image retrieval, significant improvement in recall and precision are achieved when compared to traditional simple indexing techniques.
