Abstract

GRIN optics is an active area of research in optical fiber transmission systems and optical sensing. In particular, GRIN lenses provide on-axis and off-axis imaging and Fourier transforming, which are of great importance in these fields. Taking advantage of the inherent features of the lenses, many optical configurations for connecting fibers, sources, or detectors by GRIN lenses have been analyzed for coupling and sensing purposes [9.1–9.4]. We will study three typical configurations, that is, single-mode fibers coupled by GRIN fiber lenses, corrective elements of astigmatic Gaussian beams from laser diodes by anamorphic selfoc lenses, and beam-size controllers and light deflectors made from tapered GRIN lenses. Other devices using selfoc lenses are also presented.
