Abstract

Optical bistability and hysteresis is observed experimentally with a nolinear two-dimensional (2D) periodic structure. The structure is a 2D volume index grating created in LiNbO 3:Fe crystal through hologram recording and subsequent fixing techniques. No external feedback is provided. A strong intensity-dependent photovoltaic effect in LiNbO 3:Fe material provides nonlinear coupling for the excited fields within the 2D periodic structure.
