Abstract

Pseudoisocyanine (PIC) J-aggregate Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were fabricated and their in-plane anisotropy was examined based on the polarization dependence of optical spectra. The PIC J-aggregate LB films show a large in-plane anisotropy in the J absorption band with the transition moment preferentially oriented perpendicular to the dipping direction of the substrate. Change in spectral shape depending on the polarization direction, which suggests Davydov splitting, was not observed. Interaction between surface plasmons on Ag thin film and the excitons in J aggregates also shows in-plane anisotropy similar to the behavior in absorption spectra.
