Abstract
Transparent YAG ceramic was successfully prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering (RSPS) of a mixture of Al2O3 and Y2O3 starting nanopowders at different temperatures of 1250–1500 °C. Microstructure development, mechanical properties, and optical transmittance of reactive spark plasma sintered YAG ceramics were investigated. Results showed that by increasing sintering temperature, the hardness, bending strength, and the fracture toughness of the sintered samples decreased significantly. The bending strength of 215 MPa, relative density of 99.6%, hardness of 9 GPa and fracture toughness of 2.73 MPa.m0.5 were earned for the sample consolidated at 1450 °C. Transparent YAG ceramic was obtained by spark plasma sintering at 1450 °C and the in-line transmittance of the sample was 14% at the mid IR-wavelength of 3–5 μm. Mechanical and optical properties showed that reactive spark plasma sintered YAG at 1450 °C is suitable for high temperature applications.
