Abstract

The polar Kerr rotation and ellipticity spectra together with the optical constants were measured in the spectral range 0.8–5.5 eV for a set of Co/Cu multilayered structures (MLS). Both phenomenological and ab initio approaches have been applied to describe the experimental data. It is shown that although two-component phenomenological multi-reflection approach allows one to obtain satisfactory description of the optical properties, it completely fails for the Kerr rotation spectra. At the same time ab initio density functional calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.
