Abstract

In lithium phosphate glass doped with first row transition metal ions it appears that the various transition metal ions possess normal oxidation states; Cr 3+, Mn 3+, Fe 2+ and Fe 3+, Co 2+, Ni 2+ and Cu 2+. The room temperature and 77°K spectra for Cr 3+, Mn 3+, Fe 2+.3+, Ni 2+ and Cu 2− containing glasses can be interpreted on the basis of octahedrally coordinated metal ions, while the spectrum of the Co 2+ glass correlates with a tetrahedrally coordinated metal ion. The magnetic moments for the Mn 3+, Fe 2+.3+, Co 2+, Ni 2+ and Cu 2+ are all of the order of the spin only values. The magnetic moment for the Cr 3+ containing glass is somewhat lower than the spin only value.
