Abstract

Minimum limits are derived for the noise contributions of amplifiers inserted in optical interference experiments. The results are illustrated for various kinds of linear optical amplifier, and calculations are made for two examples of interference experiment. It is shown that the presence of the amplifier reduces the information on the nature of the input light provided by the experiment.
