Abstract

Abstract The optical absorption spectrum of jarosite mineral at room temperature in the region 200 to 1200 nm is reported. Eight bands observed at 12195, 15385, 19995, 22720, 25635, 30760, 37725 and 40804 cm−1 are attributed to spin forbidden crystal field transitions of Fe(III) ion in octahedral symmetry in the mineral. The crystal field parameters which gave a good fit to these observed band positions are B = 700, C = 2800 and Dq = 900 cm−1. Mossbauer spectrum of jarosite mineral confirms that the majority of Fe(III) is in distorted octahedral site and a small amount of Fe(III) is present in less distorted octahedral site. EPR investigations of this sample revealed the presence of Fe(III) in a slightly distorted octahedral symmetry.
