Abstract

A new titanate semiconductor FeNaTi3O8 was prepared by facile solid-state reaction. The Rietveld refinements were conducted in the titanium dioxide sodium Na0.2TiO2 which is isostructural with FeNaTi3O8. The framework of FeNaTi3O8 keeps the two-dimensional layered structure with one-dimensional channels. The direct allowed band gap (2.12 eV) shows the characteristic charge-transfer transitions of (O2p + Fe3d)→(Ti/Fe)3d. The DMSO-d6 allowed transitions in FeO6 octahedral have a vital contribution to the narrow band-gap. FeNaTi3O8 can efficiently harvest visible light. The multivalent characteristics for Fe and Ti ions were confirmed by the bond valence sum calculations and XPS measurements. The optical properties of FeNaTi3O8 could be ascribed to the layered structure and multivalent ions of Ti4+/3+ and Fe3+/2+.
