Abstract

The US natural gas supply growth in recent years has been driven by massive shale gas developments. Natural gas production in the United States is expected to increase by approximately 20 percent by the end of the decade, to approximately 80 billion cubic feet per day. Available gas reserves are estimated to be sufficient for over 100 years of domestic consumption at current consumption levels. As per the US Energy Information Administration's 2014 Annual Energy Outlook projections (Exhibit 1), shale gas production will reach 46.6 billion cubic feet per day by 2040, from 27.3 billion cubic feet per day today.
