Abstract

If you haven’t heard of the terms “cell-free fetal DNA testing” and “non-invasive prenatal testing” before reading this article, it is time for you to do some research. Clinical laboratories need to stay abreast of the changes in fetal testing that have been developing during the past decade, which are making massive inroads in the field of laboratory science. For laboratory personnel accustomed to working with amniotic and chorionic villi samples, there is a huge possibility for a shift in the sample types you will typically encounter during the next year. We laboratorians need to prepare to handle this shift and to understand how the genetic analysis of fetal samples will affect our clients. The emerging technologies discussed in this commentary exemplify the massive shift in laboratories towards molecular-based technologies. These latest developments affect not only laboratories but also have implications in the financial, political, and ethical arenas.
