Abstract

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) illustrates China’s increasing interest in and influence on the global economy. German companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are beginning to notice the rapid changes in their business environment. Some of them are starting to think differently about their strategy on China and China’s BRI corridors. Because of this new situation, the author will provide some facts and background to advise German SMEs of understanding and participating in the ongoing change. In this regard the following questions will be answered: What has been changed in the last 40 years in China and why will an ambitious China with BRI become a global leader? What are the touch points in the industry between Germany and China and how would they be expected in the future? The author would like to raise awareness of the importance for German SMEs to take BRI more into account strategically. In this article the author wants to particularly address the invisible but very important aspect of cross-cultural understanding, which significantly influences strategic decisions of management in German SMEs.
