Abstract

Open abdominal aortic aneurysm (oAAA) repair is a painful procedure with no discharge opioid prescription guidance available. We hypothesized that a large variation exists in discharge opioid prescribing practices. We examined the prescribing practice in a large statewide quality database and within a single institution to understand the discharge opioid prescribing practice for oAAA repairs, to quantify the usage practices in this patient population, and to develop recommendations for discharge opioid prescription.
