Abstract

The generic name Lactobacillus Beijerinck 1901 is conserved against Saccharobacillus van Laer 1892 and all earlier objective synonyms. The type species is L. delbrueckii Beijerinck with neotype strain ATCC 9649 = NCDO 213. Although L. delbrueckii was used by Beijerinck as a simplified version of the subspecific name “Lactobacillus fermentum var. delbrucki,” it shall be held to be validly published by Beijerinck as a species name. The name Lactobacillus caucasicus Beijerinck 1901 is placed in the list of rejected names, and L. caucasicus ceases to be the type species of Lactobacillus Beijerinck.
