Abstract

Peru, with a population of 20 million inhabitants, is located on the Pacific coast of South America. Twice the size of Texas, Peru is divided into three major geographic regions by the Andes Mountains that stretch from the north to the south of the country: the coast, the Andean region, and the Amazon River jungle. Lima and its 6 million inhabitants are located on the coast. The Andean region is populated by 6 million inhabitants, whose ancestors formed the base of the Inca civilization. These people still maintain many of their ancient habits and traditions. Until 1960, 60% of the Peruvian population was rural and 40% was urban. Since that time, these percentages have reversed, and the urban population continues to grow. HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS A national system of health services provides health care.
