In Reply. —The Ophthalmology Matching Program reports that registrations for ophthalmology residency positions reached a high of 1652 in November 1985. Subsequently, there has been a steady decline in the number of registrations (1416 in 1986, 1365 in 1988, 1262 in 1989, and 1152 in 1990). Some leveling of this trend occurred in 1990 and 1991 (1152 registrations in 1990 and 1171 in 1991). The figures for 1992 (obtained after the date of the interview) show 1236 registrations. Obviously, these figures are still significantly lower than those from the mid-1980s. Discussing these trends in the Ophthalmology Match Report, August Colenbrander, MD, stated: Our statistics for the past eight ophthalmology matches show that a decline in the number of registrants since the mid-80's seems to have stopped with some signs of a reversal.
