Abstract
Ophiolite and ophiolite-related rocks have long been recognised in northern and western Newfoundland1,2. The presence of these rocks has, to a great extent, controlled the plate tectonic models developed for the tectonic evolution of the Newfoundland Appalachians. Such models have been extrapolated through south and south central Newfoundland with little geologic control. I describe here the ophiolites in south-western Newfoundland, discuss their relationship to a cryptic suture, the Cape Ray Fault, and evolve an independent model, which I compare with the model developed for northern and western Newfoundland.
