Abstract
Developing advanced manufacturing systems involves a number of specialists. Due to the numerous parts of the system, both software and hardware, the system is, however, likely to deviate considerably from ideal behaviour with frequent stops. Handling unexpected events is the key function in machine tool operation. Due to the complexity of the task, it is a job for the human operator given proper training. The theory of Maslow's human needs formed the basis for a Swedish study on the job content of flexible manufacturing systems, FMS. The supervisory control model, designed by Sheridan of MIT, used for automated production with the five operator roles planning, programming, monitoring, intervening and learning will be dealt with in the paper. The paper concludes thai it is essential for the operator to be able to use his creativity, which he can do in tasks like planning, programming and disturbance handling
