DESCRIPTION: This book deals with the surgical treatment of disorders and injuries of the adult foot and ankle regions. PURPOSE: The purpose is to aid the clinician in his or her choice of surgical management of various disorders. This important objective is met, for the most part. AUDIENCE: It is written mainly for orthopedic surgeons and other clinicians caring for the foot and ankle. Orthopedic residents will find this work very useful. The editor is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at Northwestern University Medical School. He has devoted his professional career to the treatment of foot and ankle disorders. FEATURES: The book is divided into 36 chapters. There are the traditional chapters on hallux valgus, ankle fractures, amputation, nerve entrapment, ankle and subtalar instability, and so on. Then there are chapters dealing with recent advances such as treatment of calcaneal fractures, posterior tibial tendon pathology, ankle arthroscopy, ankle malalignment, and external fixation applications. The text is very well illustrated. ASSESSMENT: Foot and ankle is a relatively new subspecialty in orthopedic surgery. However, earlier texts such as Giannestras’Foot Disorders: Medical and Surgical Management 2nd Edition (1973), and Kelikian’s Hallux Valgus: Allied Deformities of the Forefoot and Metatarsalgia (1965), laid the guide work for the present state-of-the-art for the treatment of foot disorders. I enjoyed reviewing this book, which derives its inspiration from Chicago orthopedic surgeons. I very strongly recommend it to all clinicians, including podiatrists caring for patients with foot and ankle disorders. Medical science libraries can serve their readers well by procuring this work.
