Abstract

In this paper we report on the performances of Resistive Plate Counters (RPC) [1] operated with different electrode surface treatments, different gas mixtures and different background conditions. RPCs are gas detectors in which high voltage (HV) is applied to resistive electrodes (bakelite plates) 2–3 mm apart. Signal readouts are obtained with proper capacitive coupled aluminum strips [2]. RPCs can be operated either in streamer mode (high gas gain) or in avalanche mode (low gas gain) [3]c,d,[4]. Traditional bakelite electrodes of the RPCs were treated with linseed oil thus smoothing the surface.
