Abstract

Abstract The investigation of the damage mechanisms of running fiber ropes and the respective damage parameters is important for the application of fiber ropes in engineering. Today, wire ropes and chains are almost exclusively used as transmission, connection, and safety elements in noncontinuous conveyors such as cranes and elevators. Existing standards for the examination of fiber ropes are mostly related to special ropes or special applications. Apart from these general test procedures, special test methods are explained in this chapter. Along with more widely used textile applications in mechanical engineering, the special test procedures are expected to be more specified. At the end of the chapter, some future trends in stability testing are given by computed tomography methods and monitoring techniques for displaying rope state of wear.
