Abstract

BAA is the largest airport operator in the UK, catering for over 7.5 million passengers per month. Heathrow alone, has approximately 40 million passengers per year and is still growing. Civilian airports are provided and operated for a number of aviation companies. They operate primarily under commercial and economic influences of all business and were previously owned by the local authority. They resemble a small town, by having a wide range of facilities and services that are self contained. In this paper the author considers the airside working. The author discusses airport lighting, electrical distribution, hazards, legislation covering all work at the airport, risk assessment, AGL pit and duct systems, and staff training. (9 pages)
