Abstract

Smaller crews will mean greater automation and more complex technology on board ship.Sophisticated control engineering is a precondition for the use of this technology. Such systems also provide increased safety for the ship and crew, as well as improved operating economy.Control engineering systems and computers, used as controlling agents in various processes, constitute that part of technical development which most tangibly influences the work situation of the individual. The automation of operations at a place of work very often means a reduced labour requirement - but it also means the elimination of monotonous, noisy and dirty jobs. For the individual, automation means a new working situation, a new environment, new and different training requirements and, possibly, also an opportunity for a new freedom at work. Well-developed automation also influences a variety of factors such as safety, economy, laws and regulations, organization development, etc.The development of automation affects the majority of man-machine relationships wherever an automated operation has a direct significance for the individual’s psychological or social situation on board.
