Abstract

White Island/Whakaari is an active volcano situated approximately 48km off the east coast of the North Island. The island is a popular tourist destination. On 9 December 2019 a large eruption occurred while 47 people were visiting the island. The eruption resulted in 22 fatalities (including 2 missing persons) and 25 survivors. This presentation will detail the forensic pathology response to this mass disaster including the management of possible chemical contamination of the deceased, the range of injuries sustained, the retrieval of the deceased from the island, and lessons learned.
