Abstract

Applications for efficient and reliable pulse power systems with long lifetimes (>108shots) are foreseen for electron-beam generators, ion-beam accelerators, and lasers leading eventually to inertially confined fusion reactors. These systems will have to be capable of continuous operation for sustained periods without requiring major maintenance or repair. High operating efficiency will be required not only to minimize power consumption but also to avoid heat buildup and consequent damage to components. The system described in this paper represents an initial effort to develop an efficient energy-handling high-voltage pulser to study the problems of long-life components.
