Abstract
Life cycle of an engineering project consists of three main stages, including planning, construction and operation. After completion approval, a bridge project moves to operation stage, including project maintenance and safety operation. This paper takes Chinese sea-crossing bridge projects as typical cases, and systematically illustrates main problems, methods, and methodology in the period of bridge operation and maintenance.This paper argues that to achieve 100 years’ safety operation, "Preventive Maintenance" is the process of bridge project health inspection, preventive maintenance and sustainability rebuilding, and is a system maintenance method to guarantee the long-term good service condition of a project. "Disaster risk prevention" needs the social management method to guarantee the safety and order operation of "people-vehicle-bridge" system. "Project Assessment" is a re-understanding of project value, and is the experience source of engineering understanding improvement and re-practice. The contribution to a society from a project shall be made by the society and people eventually.
