Abstract

The problems of the best planning and the best operation of storage reservoirs have occupied the professional men from the time the first modern reservoirs have been built in the second half of the last century. With time, the operational rules in the form of operational curves, tables or equations have been developed. Basically, experience with planning and operation of reservoirs, on a trial and error basis, has lead to the various types of operational rules based on the original reservoir objectives and various constraints. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the various factors involved in developing guidelines and operational rules for reservoir operation. A summary describing purposes, objectives, system operation and related factors for selected reservoir systems is given.
