Abstract

Techniques of electrochemical-spectroscopic ellipsometry, electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction using the electrochemical synchrotron radiation source were combined to characterize the growth process of chromium-containing passivation film. The operando method can characterize passivation film in detail and monitor the growth process of these films, which can not be done sufficiently using uncombined traditional structural characterization techniques. For example, Fe-18 wt%Cr steel was used to monitor the passivation process, such as adsorbed species that transformed into stable species and the decrease in the dissolution of internal metals. This means that the operando method developed in this work could effectively monitor passivation.
