Abstract

In recent years, reality TV shows have negatively portrayed people with hoarding disorder (HD), a very serious mental health issue. Although HD in older adults is quite common, it is often either missed by mental health providers or not well understood. Untreated HD can have catastrophic consequences including eviction, squalor, fire, and even death. This session intends to help bridge the knowledge gap and empower clinicians to identify and assess HD and develop confidence to make appropriate treatment referrals. It will also highlight the development of a community-based, in-home program treating seniors with HD and how geriatric psychiatry fellows can be integrated to enrich training experiences and provide psychiatry services that may otherwise not be available. Speakers will review diagnostic criteria, the common clinical features associated with HD, and diagnostic tools, as well as discuss the components of a novel treatment for HD in older adults called Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy (CREST).
