Abstract

This is the fifth ‘Alternatives’ section in City (previously we have featured work from Argentina, the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army; global bloggers and rogue billboarders). The Alternatives section focuses on alternative responses of resistance, autonomy, hope and creativity within the contemporary city. We explore, discuss and engage with groups and individuals who are developing alternative urban visions, practices and policies. We encourage material of a variety of types and from a variety of sources, especially from those which fall outside formal institutions and ways of doing things. In this issue, we present the work of the UHC Collective from Manchester, UK. This collective, part artist, part activist, has developed a series of works which add up to an intervention in the unfolding neo‐liberal city around them. In this piece they explain some of their recent work based around a collaborative website ‘OpenCity’ which aims to unpack, and offer alternatives to, neo‐liberal urbanism as it is unfolding in Manchester.
