Abstract

Open fractures of the tibial shaft remain a challenging problem for orthopaedic and plastic surgeons. Management of open tibial fractures requires a multidisciplinary approach to achieve optimal functional patient outcomes and are a common clinical scenario encountered in practice. The purpose of this review is to provide a concise update on advances in soft-tissue coverage of open tibial shaft fractures. Timing of coverage, the use of negative pressure wound therapy, lessons learned from open tibial fractures obtained on the battlefield, the type of soft-tissue coverage and future directions are reviewed. These studies are discussed in the context of the practicing orthopaedic and plastic surgeons in an effort to affect clinical practice and optimize outcomes in these patients.
