Abstract

The label Open Source was contributed by Chris Peterson of the Fore-sight Institute, in February 1998, during a strategy session held in reaction to Netscape’s announcement that it was giving away its browser free. The “Cathedral” model of software development refers to the entire class of traditional software development models. The “Bazaar” model of software development stands the above model of development on its head. Its central idea is that anyone who uses a piece of software is best suited to playing a key role in its development. The old adage “Stay close to one's customer” is what this model of development revolves around. An often-quoted example in support of this idea is the Internet. The Open Source model is capable of mustering resources of the highest quality in the shortest possible time. The key driver however, is the ability of the initiator to garner the interest of his peers and keep their motivation going.
