Abstract

Treatment of anterior open bite presents numerous challenges to the orthodontists. Should an open bite be treated early, or should it be delayed until most growth has been completed is just one of the many questions? Can treatment be done with conventional orthodontics or is a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery indicated? Anterior open bite can develop later in life because of idiopathic condylar resorption, excess mandibular growth, and by iatrogenic causes. This article will discuss both normal and pathological developments and the possible treatment approaches. The importance of understanding the etiology of open bite and address the causes of the malocclusion in each patient will be emphasized. Finally, we will suggest retention protocols following orthodontic treatment to help ensure long-term stability.
