Abstract

ABSTRACT Open Access (OA) has been a prominent topic over the past two decades as varied models have evolved and been implemented. This paper examines the evolution of OA funded by article processing charges (APCs) as the preferred model with the highest OA output at present. Through the lens of the serials crisis and within the context of the current OA environment and recent developments, the sustainability of APC-funded OA is examined. A review of proposed solutions indicates that academic libraries have an important role to play in the future of OA.
