Abstract

Opal and the zeolites, clinoptilolite and heulandite, found in the silt and clay fraction of Meridian Sand of middle Eocene age in Mississippi and Alabama are interpreted to have formed from the alteration of volcanic material. Some of the montmorillonite in the clay fraction has the same origin.
