Abstract

ABSTRACTA bound on the Rosseland mean opacity is derived, assuming that Thomson scattering can be ignored and that radiation can be described by a nonrelativistic dipole approximation. The same method yields an inequality between the Planck mean opacity and the Rosseland mean. Finally, unitarity gives another bound on opacities in the very high temperature regime.
