Abstract

Objectives Compare the management of non melanoma cutaneous malignancies between Maxillofacial surgery and Dermatology at one centre with a view to directing Maxillofacial training and improving practice. Study Design Retrospective cohort study. Methods 300 patients with cutaneous lesions seen were analysed. The cases were grouped into two: group 1: OMFS and group 2: Dermatology. The parameters included demographics, pathology, margins, false positive/negative. Data was retrieved from case notes. Results Total number 300. The sex, age and pathology distribution was not significantly different between the groups. The margin outcomes of excisions were similar, however the tumour size was significantly larger in group 1 (p = 0.004). Group 1 performed more excisions. The false negatives between the groups were comparable. Conclusion Comparing the two disciplines that managed cutaneous malignancies in the head and neck showed no significant difference in outcome. The training of OMF surgeons in terms of clinical diagnosis and surgical management of cutaneous malignancies were of adequate standard.
