Abstract

As an apparent paradox, morbidity and mortality are found to be lower in obese patients undergoing cardiac surgery, although the nature of this association is unclear. Obese patients are more prone to infections as well as components of the metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, insulin resistance and an increase in thrombotic incidence. The latter could suggest a haemostatic quality in the obese population. However, the association between obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in cardiac surgery patients is complex. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact on obesity on postoperative bleeding after cardiac surgery.
