Abstract

Summary Th. de Boer in his book “De God van de filosofen en de God van Pascal. Op het grensgebied van filosofie en theologie” defends the fundamental position that revelation may not impose any limits on the “controlling function” of philosophy. Though agreeing with this position generally, we nevertheless draw attention to an inconsistency in De Boer's argument, namely that the doctrine of the Incarnation should establish a limit to philosophy. As the direct and two-fold cause of this particular inconsistency we identify the ambiguous understanding of the notions of “salvation event” and of the deification of Jesus. That his inconsistency is possible at all can be explained in terms of De Boer's negative treatment of the Enlightenment, the lack of rigour in his thinking in regard to revelation as experience, and his inadequate distinction between belief as truth in itself and truth as it is “for me”.
