Abstract
The death of a parent is one of the most traumatic events that can occur in childhood. Globally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 1,134,000 children have lost 1 or both parents or a grandparent caregiver, with the death of a father 2 to 5 times more likely than the loss of a mother.1 Children who lose a parent are at increased risk for complicated grief, depression, poor educational outcomes, and unintentional death or suicide, underscoring the poignancy of childhood parental bereavement.
