Ontology Based Automatic Query Expansion for Semantic Information Retrieval in Sports Domain

Abstract

Ontology is the basis of representing semantic information for a particular domain. In this paper, a conceptual model for ontology based semantic information retrieval, is proposed and we constructed ontology for sports domain. Query expansion techniques have been broadly applied in information retrieval. We have proposed a semantic Query Expansion technique that includes a mathematical model to compute semantic similarity between concepts and an algorithm for query expansion, based on domain ontology. Our approach is different from others in that, 1). It utilizes the query concepts as well as the synonyms of these concepts to perform Query Expansion. 2). the new terms are added only if consisting of a similarity within a threshold 3).The method is being applied in semantic search. The proposed model provides the most relevant information according to user query.
