Abstract

Duranta repens shoot apices, axillary and accessory buds, and their vascularization have been investigated from the developmental point of view. The plastochronic changes of the shoot apex can be considered to undergo three phases: preleaf initiation, leaf initiation, and postleaf initiation. The bud originates from the peripheral meristem of the main shoot apex. Accordingly, the axillary bud meristem is considered to be a detached Its development results from divisions in the various planes in the corpus of the bud meristem, while anticlinal divisions in the tunica layers keep pace with the enlarging bud. The accessory bud meristem originates from a sector of the axillary bud meristem. The bud trace procambium and the procambial strands in the main shoot apex region differentiate acropetally.
