Abstract

Reynolds' number has been found for the onset of turbulence in water flowing through a perfectly packed hexagonal array of uniform spheres. Experiments have also been carried out on an imperfectly packed array of the same spheres and on an array of irregular particles (marble chips). A satisfactory differential manometer, which enables differences of head of the order of a hundredth of a millimetre of water to be readily determined, is describes.
