Abstract

The paper proposes a novel online purely data-driven method to estimate the power system inertia and the center-of-inertia (COI) frequency by considering integration of VSC-interfaced energy sources. Without interrupting the normal operation of the grid, the proposed algorithm utilizes ambient phasor measurement unit (PMU) data to provide accurate estimation for the inertia constants of all generators/equivalent areas and the COI frequency simultaneously and efficiently. The estimated system inertia and the COI frequency can be further used to monitor the generation-demand power mismatch early in the disturbance events, providing crucial information to the design of online frequency control measures. The accuracy and efficiency of the method as well as its application in monitoring the power mismatch have been demonstrated in comprehensive numerical studies in the IEEE 68-bus system.
