Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of research on online learning and describes the small but growing body of research on online learning in music. It summarizes annual reports issued by the Sloan Consortium and the Babson Research Group, as well as several meta-analyses of research literature on distance and online learning. It provides an overview of research on online learning in music from 2000 to 2013. The research categories include philosophical studies; program and course design and evaluation studies, the largest research category; and studies of pedagogical strategies in various music subdisciplines (applied music, music education, music theory, music appreciation, and music therapy). A focus on appropriate instructional models and practical teaching approaches is recommended for future research on online learning.
