Abstract

A significant disadvantage of out‐of‐classroom assignments is the lack of feedback available to students as they work through activities. Consequently, instructors have become increasingly interested in online homework systems that provide this advantage. While many homework systems offer similar features, such as immediate feedback, online grading, and student statistics, few offer targeted instructional feedback that is proven to help students succeed in the classroom. Several peer reviewed efficacy studies have investigated the benefits of using Sapling Learning, an online homework system that offers unique “surrogate tutoring” feedback. When students were asked “Would you like to use online homework again?”, over 90% of those who had used Sapling Learning responded favorably. In addition to being a tool students desire using, the ratio of successful to unsuccessful grades increased significantly when Sapling Learning was utilized. Engagement in Sapling Learning activities was also positively correlated with students' overall grade. This poster will further explore studies that investigate the benefits of using an online homework system with a surrogate tutoring style of feedback.
