Abstract

Abstract This entry covers a range of methods and tools players use in reworking the games they play. It discusses the history of game modifying and establishes its contemporary role in game cultures and within a larger context of co‐creative game design and development. Providing examples from both online and single‐player games, players' motivations and linkages to other gameplay practices are considered together with the ambivalent relationship between game developers and the players who modify games.
