Abstract
The basis of the European Patent Office's epoline ® system, providing an Internet-based environment for, in due course, all transactions in relation to the filing, processing, grant, maintenance and opposition of European patent applications, is outlined. The current version of the Online File Inspection service within epoline ® is then described, and compared with the existing paper-based system for speed, cost and convenience. The article concludes with an outline of some proposed future enhancements to the Online File Inspection service, such as completion of the scanning of files, a link to the online European Patent Register, and a secure version for applicants to view the progress of their own applications.
